The Wiseman (also Wiseman in [a] Carrot Suit or Carrotman) is a friendly Earthling and recurring character in the ToeJam & Earl series.

He wears a large carrot suit in all appearances. He's got his reasons.

Appearances[]

ToeJam & Earl[]

"The Wiseman, or Carrotman as he is also called, is one of the few non-hostile natives of planet Earth. For a couple of bucks this creature will identify the contents of an unidentified present.

Many who are not so wise have asked the question "Why the carrot suit?" He has never actually answered this question, but since he is the Wiseman, it is assumed that he has his reasons.

To get him to identify the contents of a present simply stop and stand next to him. When he asks for 2 bucks say "yup," then choose the present to be identified. It is usually a good strategy to save up your bucks until the wiseman has identified the Randomizer present."

The Wiseman always appears on levels 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 15, and 18.

The Wiseman has some form of psychic or clairvoyant ability. Stand next to him, and he will offer to identify the mystery contents of unopened presents for the price of 2 bucks each. This is useful for avoiding opening presents with negative effects, such as Total Bummer. It is also the only way to avoid opening the dreaded randomizer, which alters all your presents and resets the contents to unknown.

ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth[]

As in the first game, the Wiseman will identify presents for 2 bucks. In this game he will also will provide promotions through ranks when the player has collected enough points. In the first game this would happen automatically, but in Mission to Earth the Wiseman bestows promotions once you are ready.

ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove[]

"This mysterious wiseman will give you promotions in rank when you have earned enough XP. He will also identify your presents for two bucks each."
ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove online manual[1]

As in the previous game, the Wiseman again will identify presents for 2 bucks, and also provides promotions through the ranks once you have gained enough experience.

The Wiseman is present on every level in the game, including in the 'fixed' and 'random' world, except for levels in which he has been 'popped' by tomatoes, tomato rain, a bowling ball, or the Opera Singer.

In this game, the Wiseman will also provide additional services if he is spoken to, and under certain conditions. For example:

  • If speaking to the Wiseman while having no or few presents in your inventory, he may offer you a free present.
  • If low on health, he may offer you food, such as Rootbeer.
  • If you fall down to a level where you have already spoken to the Wiseman and engage in converstaion with him again, and tell him you fell off the edge, he may conjure up a unique blue elevator with a rocket underneath to take you back up.
  • Similar to the above, but if you tell him that 'I love it here!", the Wiseman may say that you are sweet and 'amp' all your presents.
