The icon of tomatoes in ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove
Tomatoes are a recurring present in the ToeJam & Earl series.
Tomatoes are a red, round fruit, often mistaken as a vegetable. Throwing these at an Earthling, whether they be hostile or friendly, will cause them to 'pop', or vanish. Tougher enemies will need to be have more tomatoes squished on them in order to 'pop' them.
An upgraded version, Sling Shot, is also available.
Trivia[]
- With the rare exception of Funk Fu, tomatoes are the only offensive weapon on the the ToeJam & Earl series.
- There are a few other methods of 'popping' Earthlings, such as paying the Opera Singer to sing, which will cause all Earthlings in a nearby radius to 'pop'. Knocking a Cupid out of the sky using a present that can cause the protagonist to jump and/or fly (Hitops, Rocket Skates, Spring Shoes, Icarus Wings) will cause a cupid to 'pop'.
- Using tomatoes at higher levels will be more difficult, given that hostiles will need to be hit with more tomatoes, but will also be quicker and deal more damage to the player, so in some instances merely fleeing may be the better option as opposed to standing still to throw tomatoes. This is especially true in the case of the Ice Cream Truck, which is a phantom and even if you manage to pop it will simply reappear.
- In the original ToeJam & Earl, tomatoes will also harm ToeJam and/or Earl if playing two-player mode and thrown at the other player. In ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, this capacity for "friendly fire" was removed. However, players can again harm each other with tomatoes if wearing the Bunny Ears Hat of Power, that can be obtained by achieving the Funklord rank.
Behind the scenes[]
- According to game creator Greg Johnson, tomatoes were included as a weapon since "they were the weapon of choice at the time".[1]
- This may be a reference to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1990).
