Presents are recurring items within the ToeJam & Earl series.

Overview[]

Presents can usually be found on the ground or hanging from balloons on Earth or Funkotron. They may also be purchased from vendors such as Mailboxes or Shopkeepers, or stolen from Santa.

In most cases, the game begins with most presents unidentified. Presents may be identified by the Wiseman, an Identify present, or by opening one up to find the surprise within-- but beware the Randomizer!

Presents can be divided into two classes:

  • Action Presents (sometimes called Timed Presents), which unlock an activity that can be used for a short period of time.
  • Instant Presents, which have an immediate effect when opened.

ToeJam & Earl[]

The player(s) begins the game with 4 Bonus Hi-Tops presents, which are always identified.

ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron[]

Panic on Funkotron introduces the concept of Pesky Presents, which are presents that will run away from the player. One must land on the present in order to collect it.

Unlike other games in the series, presents in Panic on Funkotron are not stored in an inventory; the points, Super Jars, or other items contained within are collected immediately on pickup.

ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth[]

Mission to Earth returns to the inventory concept of the first game, and introduces the concept of Risky Presents-- upon opening, there is a percentage chance of a Backfire which results in the present being treated as a random bad present.

Mission to Earth also introduces Present Combos:

  • If you open a Funkify Notes present while flying with Icarus Wings, you can fire Funkify Notes from the air as long as the wings last.
  • If you open an Instant Points present while you are using any timed present that converts Earthlings, you will get double points from them.
  • If you open an Extra Bucks or Jackpot while you are using any timed present, you will extend the timer.
  • If you open a School Book present when you're in a Tornado, you can ride it.

Additionally, various environmental present effects exist:

  • Dropping Extra Bucks near a well turns it into an open Hitops present
  • Dropping a Jackpot near a well turns it into an open Icarus Wings present
  • Dropping a Decoy present near a log pile transforms it into a Mystery present
  • Dropping Food by a picnic table transforms it into Orgasmic Food
  • Dropping Extra Bucks by a trash can transforms it into Jackpot
  • Dropping a Boombox next to a basketball hoop transforms it into 15 bucks.
  • Dropping Extra Bucks or a Jackpot by a totem pole transforms it into Super Notes
  • Dropping a Duplicate Present by a mine car transforms it into an Extra Life
  • Dropping an Identify or Mystery present by a snowman transforms it into Identify All
  • Opening Food by a Decoy makes the Decoy bigger and stronger

ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove[]

Back in the Groove retains the Risky Presents of its predecessor (now called Broken Presents). It also adds a complimentary version called Amped Presents which generally make the present effect more powerful.

Making us of Coin Meters may randomly spawn a 'Flying Present' - a fast moving present with little wings. If you catch a Flying Present, it will unlock a Locked Present, meaning that the player has a new variety or type of presents and their effects for subsequent playthroughs.

Version 1.6.1 of the game introduced the ability for Innertube, Tomatoes, Slingshot, Spring Shoes, Icarus Wings, Rocket Skates, Rose Bushes, Hi-Tops, Timed Teleport, Invisibility Paint, Big Sneeze, Earthling Disguise, Flashlight, Torch, Funk Fu Blast, Gassy Tummy, Present Freeze, Burnin' Up, Rootbeer, Protection Bubble, and Here I Am to run simultaneously. In addition, certain simultaneous activations will result in Present Synergies. Synergies that have been documented thus far:

  • Innertube + Spring Shoes = hop on water
  • Tomatoes/Slingshot + Funk-Fu Blast = tomato blast
  • Tomato Rain + Funk-Fu Blast = tomato downpour
  • Funk-Fu Blast + Spring Shoes
  • ??? + ??? + ??? = Kaboom!
  • ??? + ??? = Funkzilla!
  • ??? + ??? = X-mas time! (on ice levels only)
