Food is a recurring game mechanic in the Toejam & Earl series. Food restores the life bar of ToeJam and/or Earl, but can also hurt your life bar in some instances. Things like fries or sundaes restore hp, while moldy foods take away. Food can be found on the ground and picked up like money or opened in presents. It can also on occasion be bought from a mailbox.

Unique Foods[]
- In ToeJam & Earl and ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, the character can drop down through a hole in a small island on Level 1 to access the 'secret level' of Level 0. On Level 0, there is a stall giving out fresh lemonade that will provide an extra life. Only one lemonade can be obtained by each character per playthrough.
- Earl is often seen eating hotdogs in artwork. However these are not present in the game.
