Backer characters as they appear in the end credits
Backer characters are friendly Earthlings in ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove. There are 19 backer characters found in each playthrough.
Backer Islands[]

Backer characters are always on outcrop of land designated by a sign as "Backer Island". The Backer Islands can be reached using a present effect such as flying across using Icarus Wings, or by jumping across using Hitops, Spring Shoes or the "Panic Hat" Power Hat.
If playing the 'fixed' world, backer islands can be found on levels 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 24.. If playing the 'random' world, as with everything else this will always be randomised.
Rewards[]
- When visting a Backer Island, your character will have a dance with them and they may gift you with presents and money.
- There are two achievements / trophies associated with visiting backer characters - one will pop on your first visit to a Backer Island, and another one will pop when you have visited all 19 of the backer characters.
- Once you have visited every backer character, you will also unlock a couple of extras. These include the "Special Mailbox" and the "Black Friday" present. The Special Mailbox appears at random, as a bright yellow and furry variant of the Mailbox with a purple hat. All of the items inside are sold for just $1 each. The Black Friday present makes all enemies within a radius around fight each other at random.

Behind the scenes[]
- The 19 backer characters are all charicatures based on real-life people. 18 are of people who significantly contributed to the crowd-funding of the game, whilst the other is Cody Wright, the funk guitarist who participated in the game soundtrack (Wright also appears on Funkotron at the end of the game). The backer characters all appear in the end credits also.
